WordPress 2.5: Broken under OSX
By AndrewBoyd • Mar 31st, 2008 • Category: Blogging tips, Recent posts…I wasn’t making it up at all.
Like a good web citizen, I reported the issues I was having with WordPress 2.5 (as discussed in WordPress 2.5: Its here, its queer, it wants another beer!) to the WordPress forums in the thread Visual Editor in 2.5.
This is the reply I got from Otto42, one of the forum moderators:
No, they’re not. Lots of people had similar problems with 2.3, 2.2, and 2.1. Essentially, it’s some kind of issue with your browser or installation. Why? Well, two reasons… a) it works fine for me in Firefox and b) it’s always some kind of server problem. Usually it’s because the webserver doesn’t much like ajax calls for some reason
OK, so it works fine for him in Firefox.
I would ask him (and you) to compare the following screenshot - of a working Insert/edit link popup shown in Firefox under Vista:
With this one - the same popup, in the same blog, but seen in Firefox under OSX:
Under Vista, there are some controls that I can use to add a link. Under OSX, they are missing.
So is this really a server or install error? Or did the WordPress crew just forget about testing under OSX prior to release and are too full of themselves to admit that they have an issue?
You be the judge.
UPDATE: after Otto’s comment, I checked to see that Firefox under OSX wasn’t exhibiting this behavior with earlier versions of WordPress - here is a screenshot of WordPress 2.3.2 working just fine under Firefox/OSX:
So - you be the judge - am I making this stuff up?

Yes, well, I just tested my own site using Firefox on OSX. And you know what? It works for me.
Shouting “it’s broke, fix it fix it fix it” never works well. If you have a problem, then we’ll be happy to help you diagnose and treat the problem on the WordPress support forums. However, when you come in, say “it has a bug” and then refuse to accept that maybe it doesn’t actually have a bug, then you’re not likely to get much help or support.
Remember, the WordPress support forums are “staffed” by unpaid volunteers who help people because they want to and because they can. If you want to be rude and insulting, you’re free to pay for your support somewhere else.
Hi Otto,
thank you for your comment.
You have a bit of a sequence error there, Otto
I said “I have an issue, please help”, you said “no you don’t have an issue with WP, it is with your server” BEFORE I said “it’s broken, you have a bug, fix it”.
If a heap of other people have the same issue (that is, the exact same control on a blog working on Vista but not OSX) then there is a bug.
I know not to expect any support from you or anyone else in the Automattic empire - to be honest, I did go to the forums already annoyed about the design flaws and didn’t need the bugs on top of them. I know that you are unpaid, and that it is hard being a forum admin sometimes (I am one myself). I promise never to darken the doorway of the WP forums again.
Best regards, Andrew
