Bloggers who work too hard….
By AndrewBoyd • Dec 11th, 2007 • Category: Blogging tips, LifeI wrote an article a short time ago on Work/Blog/Life about signs that you’re working too hard (and thanks to Gary Barber for compiling the list).
I found that I had seven out of the ten signs of working too hard - something I’ve often felt - and this list brought the issue into sharp relief by making it quantifiable. It is not like I can hide behind “this is just temporary” or “I keep getting colds because there are a lot of them going around” - 7/10 signs means that I have to say yes, I am working too hard.
I know other bloggers that work too hard. Matt and Maria both work for the same consultancy as I do, and work much the same hours - Meg recently mentioned that she spends an average 14 hours a day at the keyboard. Donna is much the same.
How much time do you spend between work-work, home-work and blog-work every day? Look at Gary’s list and see how many fit with you.

I relate to a lot of the list - though I don’t often get sick. Probably because I rarely get out to catch nasty bugs
No doubt I work too hard - it comes with the territory of an online startup, but then I think you do create a “habit”, or routine, for yourself that’s hard to break. You keep telling (fooling?) yourself it’s a means to an end….
Hi Meg,
thank you for your comment.
I get sick - perhaps I do get out a little too often
I think that it does go with the territory, but it does also get in the way. I think that I am doing something worthwhile, and I think that you are too, so the “is it worth it?” question is easy to step around.
I agree - we do fool ourselves a bit - human beings do that
Best regards, Andrew
Hi All…
I don’t about you guys.. but since i am a newbie (i mean really newbie..), i got to spent about 16 hours a day… mostly i use to browse around looking for some knowledges and infos.
I do it coz i love this work… but as andrew say.. “we do fool ourselves a bit”.. haha..
guess i have to make my own schedule from now on..
Hi Elias,
thank you for your comment.
There has to be some kind of balance there - 16 hours a day is a lot, and I honestly wish you every success maintaining it
Best regards, Andrew
Balance??? a lil bit i guess…
no pain, no gain? isnt it??
Hi Ellias,
true, but you’ve got to watch that pain thing to ensure that it isn’t too much
I’ve blogged till it hurts in the past, and it can be fun for a little while. Let me know how you get along.
Best regards, Andrew
well, i got a tag for you on my blog. hope you’ll pass it on here.. or any of your blogs.
it increases our blog visibility and also may increase our Technorati Authority.
big thanks..
btw, you got any IM? can i chat with you? i’m using YM : yukie_blacknock
Hi Ellias,
thanks for that. Inbound links are a good thing, and I’ve participated in a lot of memes that share the link love and increase technorati authority. I’ll return the favour as soon as I can.
I’m only using Skype at the moment - I don’t have as much time as I would like to chat more. If you have Skype, you can catch me at odd times as username facibus.
Best regards, Andrew
Nice to hear that…
and thank you…
Looking forward to chat you soon..
Just found this post today, and heck, I can relate to many of these.
My coffee intake (and chocolate) has increased but I can assure you it does not keep me awake.
My family and friends know where to find me because I’m always here
I would have to say 7 is about right for me too!
Hi Kathie,
thank you for your comment and for finding this post
I guess I am speaking out of my own insomnia when I talk about not sleeping. It is hard to find that balance.
Best regards, Andrew
[…] me, right from the start, that blogging is highly addictive. When I read about bloggers who put in 70 hours per week, work so hard that they forget to drink, and sometimes even drop dead, I promised myself that […]
