Reflecting on Father’s Day
By AndrewBoyd • Sep 3rd, 2007 • Category: Aussie BloggerIt was Father’s Day in Australia yesterday.
Like all such experiences, it can be reframed as a blog post. So here it is, the Australian blogger’s guide to Father’s Day.
- LakeTrees wished all Aussie fathers a happy Father’s Day.
- bluemilk reflected on some fathers being easier missed than others.
- The Little Aussie Cynic is waiting for Mother’s Day to have his revenge.
- Gizmodo is looking at a geek toy delivery service.
- Soozs is making the perfect Father’s Day gift.
- Miscellaneous Adventures of an Aussie Mum mentions her children’s father and her own.
- Paul Kelly (no, the other one, not the footballer or the muso) is talking about the worst ever Father’s Day gifts.
- Lime Kettles had a full day and a good one.
- Joh Blogs talks about visiting and remembering old times.
- I don’t do mornings has a video and a Father’s Day wish.
- Fashionista recommends some Father’s Day gifts.
- Holties House remembers his Dad.
- Emunctory’s family went kayaking.
- The Hooter’s Girls have a Father’s Day special (and I didn’t even know we had a Hooters here).
- PlainJaneCreations wrote of fish and chips by the beach.
- mark lawrence wishes all the Dads well.
- Single in the City reflects on fathers and parenting.
- Canberra radio announcer Mark Parton talked about his gifts and his favourite gift of all.
- From a LAN Downunder is wishing Van Morrison well.
- A.E.Brain records some heartfelt wishes.
Note: I researched this post through a blogs.com.au search on the term “fathers day” - something to keep in mind if you’re doing a similarly themed post.
And for myself? On the face of it, I didn’t have a lot to celebrate myself - my own children and I have grown apart since their mother and I separated, and it is my first ever Father’s Day without my father, Peter, who passed away in November last year. It was a long day at work today with many people telling me about their touching family moments yesterday - I do not begrudge them their happiness but at the same time, I am not sure that I could share in their joy as easily as I might have wanted.
Here is my Dad as I like to remember him - looking out over the lotus pond at the Tiara Hotel in Labuan , Malaysia, with his wife Kath.

I find myself remembering him nearly every single day. He taught me that it was OK to think great thoughts, and to aspire to great deeds, and to dare to hope, and that to try and fail was nowhere near as big a crime as to do nothing at all through fear of failure.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

…and one more thing.
Happy Birthday, Dad, wherever you are. See you again in the next world.
Nice idea to gather these good wishes up. I hope you had a nice day, even though it sounds like it was tinged with sadness.
I hope all dads had a good day, in fact.
Sorry to hear of your loss. These ‘occasions’ can be painful when grief is fresh. You are in my thoughts and a belated ‘Happy Fathers Day’ to you.
Hi Karen,
thank you for your comment and for your thoughts.
It was a nice day, and I too hope that all Dads enjoyed it.
Best regards, Andrew
Hi Joh,
thank you - your thoughts are appreciated.
Best regards, Andrew
